| Description | This letter to Conrad Gessner, which the addressee included into his edition of the botanical works of the recently deceased physician and botanist Valerius Cordus, gives an account of an expedition to the Galanda mons (the present-day Calanda near Chur), on which Fabricius had gone the previous day together with Belinus, a medical doctor, and Pontisella, a ludi literarii rector ("schoolteacher"). He states that the ascent was quite difficult. The main part of the letter consists of a list of 19 plants which the excursionists found on the mountain. Two of them are given a German name. On the top of the mountain, Fabricius only found Doronicum and several kinds of shrubs unknown to him and his companions. (This, by the way, indicates that the party actually did not actually climb any of Calanda's summits, which attain heights between 2400 and 2800 meters, too high for shrubs to grow there.)
In all probability, Gessner only printed an extract from Fabricius' original letter. Both salutation and valediction are missing, and several passages give the impression to have been abbreviated. The initial enumeration of Fabricius' companions, for instance, is closed abruptly with the words & alii quidam &c. ("and certain others, and so on"). |
