Description | This small monograph, which is added to Gessner's treatise on plant luminiscence contains Conrad Gessner’s description of the Pilatus near Lucerne. In the dedicatory letter to Chrysostomus Huober, Gessner states that he has been on an excursion to the Pilatus together with three friends. The work was first published in 1538 in a Swiss German version by the author and a Latin translation in Basel. The land and its inhabitants, flora, minerals, etc. are presented in detail. In the lists of plants German translations are sometimes mentioned. One chapter deals with food processed from milk. It is one of the first monographs about a mountainous region at all. |
