Course design:

Dealing with current issues in organization studies, this course focuses on ‘openness’, which has become one of the most imperative virtues of modern organizations. The goal of the course is to provide an overview about different phenomena of organizational openness and link the concept of openness to related concepts such as transparency, participation and inclusion.

The course comprises two main parts. The lecture part introduces various theoretical concepts related to openness based on readings of two texts per session. Every course participant is required to hand in at least one question related to each of the texts prior the session. The questions must be entered in the course wiki under Readings on openness). Please add an acronym with the first two letters of your first and family name respectively in brackets to your question (e.g., "HaMa" for "Hans Mayr").

In the seminar part, the focus is on different manifestations of openness in terms of empirical phenomena described as open such as open source software, open innovation, open strategy or open government (see Open phenomena).

Course assessments:

Seminar: short research essay, applying one or two of the concepts introduced in the lecture to one of the empirical open phenomena (see Presentation & Essay).

Exam: the final exam covers all readings of the lecture part. It will feature nine topical sections á four true-or-false questions. Each correct answer is awarded one point, each wrong answer one minus point. The minimum number of points per section will be 0, 18 (of 36) points are required to pass the exam. Handing in the essay is a requirement for participating in the exam.
