In the seminar part of the course, groups of students address the same empirical openness phenomenon but from different conceptual angles, which have been introduced during the lecture part. While collaborating in terms of collecting and discussing empirical and scholarly material on the phenomenon, each individual group member is responsible for his or her presentation and research essay. Presentations account for 50 percent and the final research essay for 50 percent of the seminar mark.

Presentations (in-class)

Be creative regarding presentation formats and keep in mind the respective characteristics. Below are some suggestions on how you could prepare your talk:

  • Poster presentation: present the key points as a poster (print out in A0 or A1).
    • Styleguide: Block, S.M.: Do's and don't's of poster presentation. PDF-Download
  • Presentation with slides: make sure to focus on key points, choose readable font and avoid having too much text
    • Styleguide: Desjardins, J.: "You Suck at Powerpoint II", Slideshare
  • Presentation with flip chart: allows an interactive presentation style, in case you combine it with pre-written cards glued to the flip chart; please mention in advance if you want to use a flip chart.
    • Styleguide: Romkema, J.: Tips for Effective Use of Flip Charts, PDF-Download
  • Presentation with prezi: allows you to give non-linear presentation; don't use it as a way to simply animate traditional slides
    • Styleguide: Belknap, L.: Prezi How-To Tips and Tutorials for Prezi Beginners, online

Backup: Presentation videos

This section is a backup of advice for online video presentation, which have been necesssary during the Covid19 pandemic. The main goal of the presentation videos is to present the core insights and ideas when assessing the respective openness phenomenon with a focus on the concepts introduced in the lecture part, i.e. boundaries, transparency, participation, and inclusion. Feedback on the presentation shall also help the students in crafting their research essay.

Please keep in mind the following points when preparing your presentation video:

  • Focus on specific empirical cases and provide some context/background
  • Give empirical examples for your theoretical arguments
  • Prepare a one-pager with key take-home messages of your talk for your fellow students

The length of an presentation video overall should not exceed 25 minutes, which allocates about 5 minute for general introduction to the phenomenon and about 5 minutes each for the four different theoretical dimensions of openness.

You may use any way of recording the presentation: recording just the slides together with an audio track, adding videos of the speaker (easily accomplished with the open source software OBS), using proprietary tools such as Prezi or filming with your smartphones. Please be creative!
